|
Andrew Johnson |
Who Are You? |
The greatest obstacle to true spiritual growth is the illusion of self, the egoic entity. How can the Ego be recognized and thus dispelled? What is the pain-body and how does it interfere with our relationships, or lives and our happiness? And what is this happiness thing, anyway? This is a general introductory level discussion of consciousness, but Andrew will be available for the duration of the festival and invites discussion with anyone who has a personal concern or just a desire to explore the topic. (Staff Note: Warning! Wandering around the site after this workshop muttering “Who am I? Who am I?” is likely to get you an ‘interview’ with Security Trolls.) |

Anat www.esetsethet.com/priesthood.html |
Belly-Dance for
all!: Introduction |
This first part of 3 workshops is an introduction to this beautiful dance. We will discuss the importance of posture and correct stance. We will cover the basics of belly dance as well as just touch on the isolation aspect that makes this dance look as beautiful as it is. When the workshop is complete the successful candidate will know how to shimmie and hold a graceful posture. Some of the moves covered will be figure 8’s, snake arms and graceful hands, crossover’s with emphasis on foot work and one traditional move taught, for this workshop it’ll be the Saidi side step. Remember to bring your hip scarves and jingly belts! |
|
Putting those moves
together!: Intermediate |
At this stage the dancer will be able to combine some of these moves into the beginnings of the dance. We will cover movement and dance steps, by breaking them down into 3 key aspects: footwork, body movement and placements of hands and arms. There will be a shimmie drill at the start and the traditional move for the end of this workshop will be the “Fifi walk hip-drops”. Remember to bring your hip scarves and jingly belts! |
|
|
Kick-Ass Combos!:
Advanced |
For the dancer who is ready for some fun and a challenge in this workshop we will be covering a drum solo choreography that I learned at Arabesque*. With specific attention to timing and transitional footwork that plays a vital role in making a choreography work. We will be reviewing it in parts and then dancing it right through from beginning to end (if we have time!). This choreography is an awesome piece with emphasis on hitting key accents in time with drum music. Remember to bring your hip scarves and jingly belts! * This Amer’s Drum Solo choreography and music are properties owned solely by Arabesque Dance Academy & Orchestra. |
|
|
Tribal Dance
Workshop |
This workshop will have a sign up sheet and if enough interest is generated, then Anat will set a date for the workshop. At least 7 participants are needed as tribal dance is meant to be a group dance. American-style tribal dance, as performed by ‘Fat-Chance Belly Dance’ is fun in that it is danced as a group and leadership is passed off from one group member to another by giving each other “signals” and then that person takes lead. This dance encourages people to get to know each others’ dance styles and personality. The moves that will be covered in this workshop are: the Egyptian, the Morrocan with and without a twist, amongst other moves, both stationary and traveling. Remember to bring your hip scarves and jingly belts! The sign up sheet for this will be at Orval (Registration) or please feel free to come and see Anat directly. Check the whiteboards on-site for the time and place. |

Auz “the
Viking” |
The Real Gnomes:
Nissen Belief in the Northern Tradition |
Garden gnomes get no respect! Join Auz to learn about some of the lore and modern spiritual practice associated with the ‘real’ gnomes; the Nissen. You know … the ones that your cat talks to, keeps your home happy and lucky, steals your keys if you have been a stingy git, brings you presents at Yule. Yeah, those ones! Besides a wee bit of scholarly mumbo-jumbo and ‘this is what I think,’ Auz will tell the Orcadian tale of “Hugbo,” the Danish tale of “The Lazy Nisse” and the Norwegian tale of “How the Nisse Got His Own Back” to illustrate this Heathen folk belief. Staff Note: The stories will be told first, so children are very welcome to attend this part (and may not get bored). |
|
Auz “the
Viking” & Andy (also a Viking, and probably one first) |
The New Theories on
Norse Female Dress in early 10th Century Hedeby* *As this workshop was a Jock idea, we are not positive it

this is really a normal conversation for them. |
This workshop will be academic, emotionally-charged and will include vigorous debate about authenticity, with emphasis on the highly sensual nature of “the Scandinavian Wool Sack". |
|
Carpenar |
How to Hide from
your Wife and Appear Busy Doing Manly Things* *As this workshop was a Jock idea, we are not positive it has been agreed to by Carpenar. |
This workshop, helpfully suggested by Jock, includes the
constructing of amazing devices for the wonderment of all so that when wifey
finds you and sees all these sweaty men, muscles |

Conrad & Hobbes |

We will also explore when and how you can use those energies in your modern day-to-day challenges. Of course, we will be using foam-based weapons and the hit-location system, so no one actually gets hurt (much). |
|
Mixed Warrior
Circle |
There will be 1 men-only and 1 mixed event, we will explore the primal Warrior energies that are called up when you must pick-up a sword to defend yourself and your tribe against an enemy. We will also explore when and how you can use those energies in your modern day-to-day challenges. Drumming Foundations, or How Do You Work this Thing? |
As with a house, a strong foundation will make for a strong drummer. This workshop is for those who wish to learn to drum or more advanced players who wish to reinforce their already existing skills. The focus will be on west African djembe styles and technique, though we can touch on other percussion if participants wish. We’ll cover the basic tones of the drum and learn how to combine these with a sense of time into rhythm and groove. We’ll look at different rhythms to play and we will also explore the possibilities and magic of the drumming circle. Participants will walk away from this with a good sense of how to be able to drum at the nightly drum and dance festivities. Please bring your own drum (and any extras you might have for others to learn on) as there will not be drums provided. (An hour and a half.) |
|
Extreme Instrument
Repair or “What to do with a pile of wood after the Scots have left”* *As this workshop was a Jock idea, we are not positive it has been agreed to by Ja. But, then again, ja did write-up a description for the workshop, so you never know. |
Have you ever been given an instrument only to see it be destroyed by large men in kilts with an apparent hate-on for artistic expression, culture and the finer things in life? Have you ever fainted after seeing a somewhat usable musical tool reduced to splinters in an unprovoked act of violence before your very eyes and then cast into the fire? If so, this workshop is for you. We will learn how to pick up the pieces (literally and emotionally) and render them into a form that allows us to express ourselves again. Please bring splinters, shards and assorted parts, mead, duct tape, rubber bands, more mead, a hammer, other alcoholic beverages, a tennis racket, more duct tape, and Scotchguard. Workshop lasts as long as the mead does. Note: large men in kilts, please consult the workshop facilitator and security before showing up to this workshop. This workshop is dedicated to the great Gaulish bard Cacophonix. |

Poetry for Folks
with Something to Say |
When we go beyond our everday words, and into the truth of things, it is there that poetry can be made. And sometimes, too, it’s about the delight of playing with words and sounds. This workshop is for anyone and everyone who can hold a pen and wants to be honest and/or playful on paper. We will explore content and creative process, though not necessarily form. Through a series of challenges and games, we will write several pieces, and take turns reading them out loud, should people wish. We are already poets-the workshop is to help us remember this and exercise some creative muscles. Please bring pen and paper if you have some; though there will also be some of these materials on hand. (An hour and a half.) Staff Poem: Rose are Red, Violets are Blue; Ja’s pretty nifty and kinda cute, too. |
|
Voice and Creation |
Everyone can sing, and it is the right of each of us to sing. This workshop is for those who wish to explore the potential of their voice and of all our voices working together. Emphasis will be on improvisation (spontaneous creation), though we can look at working with some familiar chants if participants wish. The workshop will help to dispel the myth and fear of “tone deafness” and “the wrong note”. We’ll start with some warmups, and then move onto exploring our own voices, including vocal percussion. Afterwards, we’ll look at various ways of singing together and listening to each other, and will touch on some ideas for ritual. Please bring your voices, some water to drink and an openess to fun, exploration and beauty. (An hour and a half.) |

(basic rooting and gathering) to not drain your partner, connecting and
opening chakras with your partner, circulating energies from one partner to
the other (the orgasmic circle), different types of orgasms and different
